Welcome to
Greathouse Purebred Nubian
Dairy Goats

Portrait of Annie with her last triplets in the
yard of the GREATHOUSE, a late 17th century reproduction home,
designed by Jan Meister.  Original oil painting by Regina Briskey.

In 1987, GreatHouse Farm, in Gainesville, FL, started as an equestrian center, boarding horses; myself, Jan, teaching riding lessons, and breeding/training Appaloosa Sport Horses, which we still continue to do. But life on this farm took a new path 17 years ago when we bought a 3 week-old Nubian doeling through our farrier. We named her Anniegoat.

Knowing nothing about goat care and thinking that milk replacer would be fine, we panicked when she immediately grew ill. We took her to our farm equine vet, who, thankfully owned goats...Annie was given Albon and we were sent to Jan Brewer, Jan-T Nubians, in another town for fresh goat milk. After buying Annie milk for 6  months (yes, still a 7 mo. old bottle baby!!) and given the gift of top quality goat mentoring and learning to show and care for goats the right way, I was addicted!

Jan Brewer became my lifelong mentor, still forever my dear friend. In a week, Annie was thriving. My husband, Charlie, and I raised her as a daughter...she spent her days with me at the barn and slept between us, her entire life of 15 years, in bed at night. She traveled everywhere - loved the beach -  with us in the car, a Mercedes purchased for Annie with her milk money (2 gal/day after her 1st kidding) and yes, she was house and car broken except for one accident. Ask me sometime about the story of Annie taking her Christmas gifts to put under Jan's tree; Annie drank too much champagne, pee-ed, and passed out under the Christmas tree...YIKES!

With Jan Brewer's help, we registered her NOA, She was purebred but her dam had no papers although her sire did. Anniegoat officially became GN The GreatHouse AnnaBanana Goat. I joined the Florida Dairy Goat Association and the American Dairy Goat Association and look forward to becoming a life member. Well, that's how GreatHouse Nubians was born.

We bred Annie to a top Jan-T Nubian buck and bought several purebred doelings and eventually our first buck. So, today in  2009, we have 5 herdsires and 40 or so weanlings, yearlings and senior milkers. Anniegoat is no longer with us except in spirit and in our American Nubian line of her granddaughters, great granddaughters and even great-great granddaughters...most of our does are purebred out of Kismet, Kastdemur's, Jan-T and Longman bucks.

This year we went on DHI milk test, have Linear Appraised since 2001, and now have 3 Superior Genetics does...lots of show legs, and as we downsize now on the horse activities, hope to show more, finish more does, earn more milk stars and continue our herd improvement program.

We attended our first National Show in 2008 and our two Junior Yearlings placed 11th and 12th. We plan to see all of you at the 2010 National Show in Louisville.

Our herd is Florida certified/accredited, tested CL free, and we practice strict CAE prevention.

WELCOME to our new website and a hearty welcome to GreatHouse Nubians--putting milk in the bucket and ribbons on the walls!!
